Everything you need to know about how SkipTheLatte calculates Bitcoin opportunity cost.

How It Works

The calculator takes three inputs: your spend amount, frequency, and a projected Bitcoin CAGR. It then:

  • Totals your spending over the chosen time horizon (amount × frequency × years).
  • Calculates BTC accumulated by dividing total spend by the current BTC price — assuming you bought BTC with every dollar instead.
  • Projects future value by compounding that BTC amount at the selected CAGR: Future Price = Current Price × (1 + CAGR)^years

The result is the opportunity cost — what your portfolio could be worth if you had stacked Bitcoin instead of spending.

Each scenario represents a different Bitcoin annual growth assumption (CAGR):

  • Bear 10% Conservative — similar to gold or real estate historical returns.
  • Base 21% Moderate — roughly aligned with Bitcoin's long-term declining CAGR trend.
  • Bull 40% Optimistic — reflects sustained adoption-driven growth.
  • Hyperbull 60% Aggressive — replicates early-era Bitcoin growth. High risk scenario.

You can also drag the CAGR slider freely to any value between 5% and 60%.

A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin — 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats.

"Sats per $ spent" tells you how many satoshis you could have bought with every single dollar you spent on your habit, at today's BTC price.

Formula: 100,000,000 ÷ BTC_price_in_USD

If BTC is at $60,000, then $1 = 1,667 sats. Small amounts add up quickly over years of compounding.

The current version uses today's BTC price as the purchase price for all accumulated BTC. This is a simplified model — it assumes you convert your habit spending to Bitcoin at the current price, then hold it to your target year.

A true DCA simulation would require fetching historical price data for every purchase date. This will be added in a future update.

Data & Prices

Prices are fetched from the CoinGecko public API in real time. The data auto-refreshes every 60 seconds. You can also tap the ↻ button for an instant refresh.

CoinGecko aggregates prices from hundreds of exchanges. The free tier has rate limits — if you see "Unavailable," simply wait a moment and refresh.

The calculator displays values in five currencies: USD, KRW, JPY, EUR, and GBP. Select your preferred currency from the top navigation bar. Exchange rates are pulled directly from CoinGecko's multi-currency price endpoint.

Yes. In Section 02 THE FUTURE, the BTC price input is pre-filled with the live price but is fully editable. Click or tap the field and type any value you want to use for the calculation — for example, a target price for sensitivity analysis.
